History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Thirteen

Part 3

...
Terniff smiled with the compliment to her appearance, but instead of bringing up her dissatisfaction with her hair she mentioned a topic that she preferred to speak about. “Will it take us that long to reach the lake?”

“Oh, rivers are never straight, and our uncertainty of the turns makes our advance rather cautious. The clouds from a storm that passed during the night gave us almost no sight, so we are now at anchor. I will not get us back going until after Lord Axiste has been returned to shore.”

“You will then need to wait until the sun has moved up into the sky.”

“Aye, the kevalla need time to warm their blood. Gives us about the only advantage against them, as they are quite tough in a fight.”

Terniff grinned as she said, “All right, we are not planning to attack the kevalla.”

The features of the captain momentarily displayed a fear that he had spoken improperly before he mumbled, “No, my lady. Just griping about needing to wait.”

There is some action, but I focus on the people.

History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Thirteen

Part 2

PRUDE ALERT! Nothing is directly stated and they are married, but some people get excited easily.
...
The silence of the room perplexed him. Tasbirn could not believe that no one bothered him. Curious if only a servant had opened the door to check on the conditions of the room, and seeing it occupied had decided to come back later, he turned to the door hoping that he could return to his thoughts.

He did not know whether to smile when he saw his wife standing at the door. If she had a problem, he definitely wanted to hear it. It however bothered him that she had not spoken. If anyone had the authority to demand his time, it was her. He thus felt a need to chastise her for holding back as if she was a servant.

The lady still appeared very lovely. Her small form clearly showed the changes from being pregnant. He loved her breasts, but could see that they now bulged out to a size that they would fill his hand instead of simply being soft masses that he could fondle with his fingers. Her belly jutted out in a manner that could not be associated with fat. While he still wondered what problem she had brought to him, Tasbirn had to smile as he appreciated the view.

Little Nalisha does worry about her husband.

History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Thirteen

Part 1

...
Sails dropped as hails were exchanged between the humans aboard the vessel and the kevalla on the shore. When the ship finally stopped and the gangplank set down, Axiste saw the annoyed look of the captain as a number of the new arrivals quickly strode passed him to look over the front of the vessel even as a couple began climbing the ropes to gain an even higher view. Hearing the kevalla begin to point out to the humans manning the poles on how to differentiate the boggy land from the river channel, the face of the captain relaxed as he turned to one that still stood near him.

“I am Lord Axiste. Excuse the rudeness of the men that I brought to you, but they felt your crew showed more unease in their duties than they should have been.”

The gaze of the master of the vessel turned to study those he was to accept as part of his crew, then he looked back to the elder kevalla to say, “Welcome aboard. At least the men appear to want to work. That is more than I see in a number of new hires.”

Plans are made to take the fight back to the one that started the curse.

History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Twelve

Part 3

Terniff had to stop as she noticed the scene ahead. She and Renwyn were moving on horseback through the marsh. While her height upon the animal gave her a slightly good view of the terrain, beyond a limited distance all she could see were plants growing up from a layer of water. The sight of a ship moving in the distance did not appear real at all.

Renwyn rode his horse up just a short distance, then looked back to say, “The ship is going that way, so we should go in that direction to head it off. However, how does the river flow?”

“That is the question that has kept our land free from ship traffic, Renwyn. We are just going to have to be careful.”

Another threat of the curse begins to be challenged.

...
“Now, Neathix, I don’t believe that. Still, I guess that I can tell my wife to give her basket to your husband to give to my son.”

“That would help appearances, Axiste. Thank you.”

He looked up into the lady’s eyes as he said, “Don’t worry about Betemma. He is doing very well.”

“I heard that your son was hurt.”

“Boys will be boys.” Seeing the lady laugh had Axiste answer a little more honestly. “There is danger in our land, but Nevixt and Betemma are being careful. We aren’t going to war, Neathix. We are only digging up the past.”

It is not suspense if you don't know what could happen, so I tell you.

...
Terniff looked around, and seeing that she and the viscountess walked alone made a comment, “You don’t seem to be doing well making friends.”

“I am not developing a social circle, but I am making friends. I actually like the bluntness of Mardon. The conversations at my socials are much more diverse than I remember occurring back home.”

“But you are often seen moving about alone.”

“I am the female authority in this land. I find too many consider me a pretty face. I want it known that I can stand alone. I will not allow others to group me with the other possessions that those of Mardon brought back from the war.”

Our two main ladies again have an encounter.

...
Axiste saw more than a dozen soldiers present in the room, so he spoke simply to see how much more he could learn. “I was only planning to hire about a dozen.”

Norvichy said, “Hire about three dozen, Axiste, and a few soldiers as well. I am taking a number of men with me into the mountains.” His hand passed around to indicate those in the room as he added, “I am taking who I consider the best.”

“You are returning to war?”

Some chuckled while Captain Bostull said, “No, Lord Axiste. We are going to capture a roc.”

Big plans are being made, but Axiste keeps the focus on what is important.

...
Terniff had seen that expression from Tasbirn before. His face always displayed those features when he really did not care what others said. Terniff had seen that look from the man when he announced his commitment to Nalisha, so was not surprised when his words had no connection to what he had heard.

“We are out here to capture Telelum. It occurred last night. It occurred last night due to you going out and picking a fight with a swamp serpent. Telelum was spotted watching you, Terniff. You thus need to go out again.”

“It won’t matter whether I go out again or not, Tasbirn, so I am not going out.”

His face froze as he considered how to deal with her words. “What do you mean that it won’t matter?”

Ghosts appear human, because they don't act as one would expect.

History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Eleven

Part 1

...
Nevixt had hurt his leg in an attempt to kill some wild pigs. The animals had a mean personality and a sturdy physique. They did not stop in pain upon receiving a mortal injury as other animals, but would seek the one that caused the injury to inflict their own version of justice. After the two young kevalla mentioned their reluctance to attack wild pigs, some of the soldiers had told them about a tactic to drive the animals over the edge of the pit. The strategy did not work very well with the animals, as they tended to move towards a threat and not away from it. As he tried to avoid being gored, Nevixt found himself falling into the excavated volume.

Axiste did not hear his son speak, but another voice sounded out, “Whoa, you… young man, why are you moving to block my way?”

“I am simply attempting to prevent you from walking the same way as I.”

Facts about the curse are beginning to be revealed.

History of Mardon Castle
Chapter Ten

Part 3

...
The figure within the net squirmed with Tasbirn getting the feeling that the man wanted to look at him as he said, "You must stay nothing more than a figurehead. The restoration of your land cannot come by your hand. You must depend on others."

"What? I led my knights and troops successfully through the trials of a most horrendous war. I set in motion policies that managed to keep my people alive through the famines caused by the destruction of crops. I also designed this trap that managed to catch your ghost. I can restore my land."

"You cannot restore your land. Don't you understand why this curse has persisted? Selfish motives cannot succeed."

"Selfish? My land and my people are suffering! How can removing their ills be considered selfish?"

Just because you have a source of information doesn't mean that you will get information.
